Vancouver Upholstery' story

The upholstery industry is not unfamiliar to its owner, John Gledstone, as his family has been in the upholstery industry dating back to the 1940s. John’s grandfather, Wynne Gledstone, opened a shop in Richmond in 1946 which he successfully maintained for 40+ years.  During those years  Wynne taught his three sons (John’s two uncles and his father) the craft, whom all have gone on to also own their own shops as well. John's first experience was at 1-week old when he was sat up on his father's cutting table to watch him work. He started working in his father’s shop in 1991 at the age of 14. It was then he learned firsthand from his father, and at times an uncle or his grandfather, how to refinish woodwork, cut and sew fabrics, upholster all styles of antique to modern furniture and marine seating. This apprenticeship also lent itself to other important skills such as. managing the day-to-day operations, supply knowledge, and communicating with customers. John further honed his skills in his field working for a decade between large custom furniture manufacturers as an upholsterer and Head of R&D. In 2013 John returned to follow in his family's footsteps. Fueled by a passion to continue with the challenging  craft of custom upholstery and restoring family heirlooms, he created Vancouver Upholstery. With nearly 80 years in the industry the Gledstone family has earned a reputation for exceptional attention to details and an expertise in long lasting quality upholstery and soft furniture.
